Eminent Domain in Speed City

On April 9th 2011 I purchased the domain "circuitoftheamericas.net". Since the domain was available I thought this would be a great opportunity to connect with Formula 1 fans interested in the new race track coming to Elroy Texas. It wasn't until April 12th of the same year that Formula One United States announced the name of the new circuit.

Over the past two years, a couple of local fanatics brought the Speed City Cam to life and shared an inside view of a race track being born. As part of our plan to promote "Speed City" with the world, we used the .net domain to forward folks to the live cam.

Today I'm sitting in my living room staring at a letter from a local Austin law firm asking me to hand over the .net domain to Circuit of the Americas. The letter claims "unauthorized use of the COTA trademark". The letter was delivered to me overnight by UPS. One line of the note says "Our client sincerely appreciates your enthusiasm and support and recognizes that you are a close neighbor".

The .net domain in question has since been parked and the Speed City Cam project ended in early November. I remember nearly 2 years ago sitting in a downtown conference room talking with COTA officials about the future of Elroy. I guess they forgot what we talked about. I haven't forgotten and I've been a huge supporter of the project all along. Merry Christmas Mr. Grinch!

  2. Today, we were informed by the Executive Vice President of the track that the dates March 12-13, 2013 were no longer available to us. COTA stated that they were reserving those dates for "team testing" after having confirmed, very recently, that they were available to us.
With the way COTA is treating private citizens and amateur drivers i wold be interested in working on a anti COTA website now.

This came in today form David Murray

We are removing COTA from our schedule and will refund all event payments immediately.

While we understand that tracks have their choice as to who/when to rent their facility, we are frustrated and disappointed by the way that this deal was handled.

David and I regret the inconvenience that this caused you.
